Misc. Eliot

In all of my years, one thing does not chang./However you disguise it, this thing does not change:/The perpetual struggle of Good and Evil./Forgetful, you neglect your shrines and churches:"

"Thus your fathers were made/Fellow citizens of the saints, of the household of GOD,being built upon the foundation/ Of apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself the chief cornerstone,/But you, have you built well, that you now sit helpless in a ruined house?

"There is not life that is not in community, and no community not lived in prasie of GOD."

"Here were decent godless people:/Their only monument the asphalt road/And a thousand lost golf balls."

"We build in vain unless the lord builds with us."

"What is the meaning of this city?/Do you huddle close together because you love each other?"

"Be prepared for him who knows how to ask questions"

"Though you forget the way to the Temple,/There is one who remembers the way to your door:/Life you may evade, but Death you shall not./You shall not deny the Stranger."

"Then it seemed as if men must proceed from light to light, in the light of the Word"

"Yet always struggling, always reaffirming, always resuming their march on the way that was lit by the light;/Often halting, loitering, straying, delaying, returning, yet following no other way."

"Men have left GOD not for other gods, they say, but for no god; and this has never happened before"

"what have we to do/ But stand with empty hands and palms turned upwards/In an age which advances progressively backwards?"

"When the Church is no longer regarded, not even opposed, and men have forgotten/All gods except Usury, Lust and Power. "

"Let us mourne in a private chamber, learning the way of penitence,/And then let us learn the joyful communion of saints."

"Shall we not bring to Your service all our power/For life, for dignity, grace and order,/And intellectual pleasures of the senses?/The lord who created must which us to creat/And employ our creation again in his service/"

"Visible and invisible must meet in His Temple;/You must not deny the body."

"But the mystery of Iniquity is a pit too deep for moral eyes to plumb."
...
"But be ye satisfied that you have light/Enough to take your step and find your foothold."

"And when we have built an alter to the Invisible Light, we may set thereon the little lights for which our bodily vision is make./And we thank Thee that darkness reminds us of light."
